Hon’ble President, respected past Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Members of the Executive Committee and Friends,
It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome all of you to this Annual General Meeting of our Parishad, at St. Xavier’s College (autonomous), Kolkata. This is the third such meeting organized by the president Executive Committee which has been functioning since 10th day of April 2005. The last AGM was held at St. Xavier’s College on 25-06-2006.
The 26th annual conference of our Parishad was held during February 3-5, 2006 under the auspices of Visva Bharti University. It was a great success. The conference balances are still due.
Friends, you will be glad to note that we have organized a mid-year whole-day seminar on “50 years of Mahalanabis strategy of Planning” on 17.9.2006 in collaboration with and at St. Xavier’s College. It was well attended. Thanks to St. Xavier’s authorities. A. K. Dasgupta Memorial Award has been instituted. The first lecture was delivered at Lady Brabourne College by Andre Beteille, Director of ICSSR. Governor, Gopal Krishna Gandhi had come to listen to the lecture.
Our 27th annual conference was held under the auspices of Lady Brabourne College, during February 17-18, 2007. It was a grand success. We have already received surplus of Rs. 45,000/-. Special thanks to the local organizing committee and the Secretary, Dr. Mou Roy.
I am glad to inform you all that a book on 25 years of West Bengal Economy has been published. New books are forthcoming on Regional Disparity and Capital Account Convertibility. A draft directory of BAP members is also published.
“Artha Beekshan” is completing 25 years. We have been getting support from advertisers and we are grateful to them. Members are requested to take their copies. Our heart felt thanks go to the members of the editorial board for their selfless efforts to bring out these issues.
As I had
mentioned in my last year’s annual report, we have not yet been able to solve
the problem of accommodation for our Parishad Office. It is
needless to say that the financial constraints are the basic problems. We may
have to leave the IIDS Office soon.
I extend my sincere thanks to the office bearers, members of the Executive Committee and particularly to the life members and ordinary members for their constant co-operation. I would also like to thank St. Xavier's College for continuous support, Lady Brabourne College for holding the 27th Annual Conference of the Parishad and many institutions for their financial support and co-operation.

REPORT

It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome all of you to this Annual General Meeting of our Parishad, held at Xavier’s College (autonomous), Kolkata. This is the second such meeting organized by the president Executive Committee which has been functioning since 10th day of April 2005.
We are sorry to inform you of the sad demise of Sri Haradhan Ghosh and Dr. Tara Shankar life members of our Parishad. We pray for the repose of the souls of the departed. May their souls rest in Peace.
Like previous years, in 2005-06 also, four issues of our referred journal “Artha Beekshan” (Vol. 14) have been published. The conference (26th ) Number was combined as nos. 3 and 4. The first 2 issues of Vol. 15 are now ready for release and distribution. Members are requested to take their copies and also their friends. Our heart felt thanks go to the members of the editorial board for their self less efforts to bring out these issues
On 25th September 2005, a one day mid-year seminar on “Development Economics: Gender Issues” was organized at Rabindra Bharati University. We are now publishing the proceedings as the special number of the Artha Beekshan. The 26th annual conference of our Parishad was held during February 3-5, 2006 under the auspices of Visva Bharti University. It was a great success and was attended by scholars like Kirit Parikh, Kausik Basu, Mihir K Raskshit and many others.
Friends, you will be glad to note that we are going to organize a whole-day seminar on “50 years of Mahalanabis strategy of Planning” on 17.9.2006 in collaboration with and at St. Xavier’s College. Our 27th annual conference will be held under the auspices of Lady Brabourne College, during February 17-18, 2007. All of you are cordially invited to attend this conference and make it a grand success. You will get all information about this conference from the circular that has been already sent to all members.
You are aware that our Parishad had instituted Dr. S R Sen Best Book in Economic Award” from 2001-02. Thanks to the donation by Dr. S R Sen, an eminent economist and past conference President of the Parishad. This year 2005-06, the 4th such award will be declared very soon.
This year (2005-06) Prof Anindya Sen, professor of Economic IIM, Kolkata has been selected as the recipient of Prof Panchanan Chakrabarty Memorial Award. We congratulate the recipient of this award and express our sincere gratitude to the expert committee, which had made the nomination.
During the year, a seminar on Economic Reforms was organized at Presidency College, Kolkata. I am glad to inform you that an edited book on “Management of State Finances” arising out of the proceedings of the mid-year seminar 2004 has been published. Let me add that membership directory is also to be published very soon.
As I had mentioned in my last year’s annual report, we have not yet been able to solve the problem of accommodation for our Parishad Office. It is needless to say that the financial constraints are the basic problem. The steep fall in the rate of interest, hike in the postal and transportation charges and prices of other items have led to high expenditure of our Parishad.
I extend my sincere thanks to the office bearers, members of the Executive Committee and particularly to the life and ordinary members for their constant co-operation. I would also like to thank St. Xavier's College for continuous support, Visva Bharti for holding the 26th Annual Conference of the Parishad, the United Bank of India, the IEA Trust for Research and Development, NABARD, ICSSR, Planning Commission, Govt. of West Bengal and many other institutions for their financial support and co-operation.
Special thanks to local organising secretary, St. Paul’s College for contribution to BEA of Rs. 70,000/- balance after the 25th silver jubilee conference. This is the 1st time we receive such amount after a conference.
